GBP Products & Services: Complete Setup Guide
Products and Services are two separate sections on your Google Business Profile that give you additional space to showcase what you offer and include keyword-rich content.
Products vs Services: What's the Difference?
| Feature | Products | Services |
|---|---|---|
| Photo | Yes — required | No photo support |
| Price | Yes — price or range | No |
| Description | Up to 1,000 characters | Up to 300 characters |
| Categories | Custom product collections | Grouped by service type |
| CTA button | Buy, Get offer, Learn more, Order | No |
| Visibility | Prominent "Products" tab on listing | "Services" tab, less prominent |
| Best for | Retail, restaurants, salons | Home services, pros, healthcare |
💡 Pro Tip
Even service businesses should consider adding "Products" — you can treat your services as products to get the benefit of photos, pricing, and CTA buttons. For example, a plumber could add "Water Heater Installation" as a product with a photo and price range.
How to Add Products
- Search for your business on Google → click "Edit profile"
- Select "Products" from the menu
- Click "Add product"
- Fill in the fields:
- Photo: High-quality image (minimum 250×250px)
- Product name: Include a keyword naturally
- Category: Create logical groupings
- Price: Fixed price or price range
- Description: Up to 1,000 chars — use keywords naturally
- Button: Choose a CTA and add the URL
How to Add Services
- Search for your business on Google → click "Edit profile"
- Select "Services" from the menu
- Google may auto-suggest services based on your category — keep relevant ones, remove inaccurate ones
- Click "Add more services" to add custom ones
- For each service, add a clear name and brief description
Product/Service Naming Best Practices
✅ Good Names
- • "Emergency Drain Cleaning"
- • "Ceramic Dental Crowns"
- • "Residential AC Installation"
- • "Full Interior House Painting"
- • "Wedding Photography Package"
❌ Bad Names
- • "Service 1" (too vague)
- • "Best Drain Cleaning Austin TX" (keyword stuffing)
- • "Crowns" (too short)
- • "CALL NOW FOR A FREE ESTIMATE!" (not a service)
- • "Miscellaneous" (uninformative)
Writing Product Descriptions
You have 1,000 characters for product descriptions. Use this formula:
[What it is] + [Who it's for] + [Key benefits] + [What's included] + [Why choose you]
Example: Water Heater Installation
"Professional water heater installation for homes and businesses in Austin, TX. We install tankless, traditional tank, and hybrid water heaters from top brands including Rheem, Bradford White, and Navien. Every installation includes removal and disposal of your old unit, a full inspection of your water lines, and a 5-year labor warranty. Licensed and insured with same-day service available. Over 500 water heaters installed with a 4.9-star average rating."
How Many Products/Services Should You Add?
- Products: Add every distinct offering — businesses with 10+ products tend to see higher engagement
- Services: List all services you offer — comprehensive lists help Google match you to more search queries
- Organize: Group into logical categories (e.g., "Repairs," "Installation," "Maintenance")
- Quality over quantity: Each item should have a complete description and (for products) a quality photo
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using stock photos — Real photos of your actual products/work perform dramatically better
- Leaving descriptions blank — You're wasting valuable keyword-rich content space
- Not linking CTA buttons — Every product should link to a relevant page on your website
- Outdated pricing — If prices change frequently, use price ranges instead of fixed prices
- Ignoring seasonal updates — Add seasonal products/services and remove out-of-season ones
